Frequently asked questions

Often when we deal with new customers and prospective customers there is a perception that a Biotechnical Energy food waste to energy or food waste reduction system will make extra work for the team members on-site but this is NOT the case!

Your separated food waste still goes into a collection bin in exactly the same way it does now – only it goes into the one that we will have turned into a digester.

There is no extra workload for your team.

The food waste to energy and food waste reduction digesters are designed to handle food and other organic waste.

This means you CAN add food, paper, cardboard, kitchen paper and napkins.

By contrast, you should NOT add metals, minerals, polymers and plastic bags.

Please note, none of these items will break the digester, but they will remain undigested and will need to be removed by hand at a later date.

The material left at the end of the digestion process – what we call the digestate – can be handled in two different ways:

1) For small quantities, we can do exactly what you would have done before and dispose of it as waste. The difference now is you have reduced it by 75% in terms of size and weight so your removal costs will be far less. this is the food waste reduction option.

However, it is no longer food waste and can go in your normal waste bin, which is typically a much lower rate as well.

2) For larger quantities (around 2 tonnes a week or more of initial food waste) you have the option to undertake food waste to energy recycling by using the digestate as a highly energy rich fuel that you can use in a boiler to create heat energy or cooling.

In either case, read here to learn more about the economics of food waste to energy conversion

Obviously this depends on your food waste removal costs, but at typical values if you create 75Kg or more of food waste per week you will have the potential to save money with one of Biotechnical Energy’s food waste reduction or food waste to energy systems.

In other words, if you fill one typical food waste bin a week or more then give us a call!

This depends on the amount of food waste you create, your costs of food waste removal and whether you install a food waste reduction system or a food waste to energy recycling system.

However, as an absolute minimum, the food waste reduction system will save you 75% of your food waste removal costs. If you also use the

If you also use the digestate (the material left after the reduction process) as fuel to create heating or cooling energy (as a fuel or co-fuel in a boiler system) the savings can be considerably more.

Yes, we have an arrangement to get leasing from a third party supplier who understands our food waste reduction and food waste to energy systems and the economics involved.

Conservatively, with a single one of our smaller machines, we would normally expect to see breakeven in two to three years.

This depends on several factors including the amount of food waste you produce and your cost of food waste removal but, generally speaking, the more waste you produce the quicker the payback will be.

Our systems are robust and built to last.

Typically an annual visit will be enough to keep everything running smoothly.

We provide a guarantee for 12 months on all our products and systems.

If you ever need spares we will be happy to provide them.

Our systems are extremely easy for your team to use and they effectively just continue to add food waste – separated in the normal way – to a food waste bin. The difference is that the bin will now be part of our food waste reduction system.

Full training is provided at installation and supported through videos.

We use proprietary blends of special bacteria to undertake the food waste reduction in our systems but these are completely self-replicating in our systems so there is no need for you to replace them.

The amazing thing is that one of our food waste reduction or food waste to energy systems will almost always require less space than you currently use for food waste storage.

For example, if you currently have 4 bins for collecting food waste, we will replace one of these with a beD200 (our smallest unit that fits inside a food waste bin) and you will only need one other bin.

This means you will go from needing space for 4 food waste bins to just requiring space for 2 food waste bins (one of them the beD200).
